 The Ribbon Star block is made with half square triangle units and squares. There are a variety of ways to make a half square triangle unit - from squares, strips or using templates and more. To make the strip cutting widths all the same, I'm going to use the strip method and cutting using a side right triangle ruler. Balkan Puzzle block uses 3 fabric, background, accent, plus one more. It is built entirely with half square triangles. Cut 1 strip 2 inches wide from each of the 3 fabrics.

Just the background and accent fabric needed for this block. Cut 4 background and 1 accent 2½ inch squares plus 2 strips 2½ wide by about 7 inches long from both background and accent fabrics.

This week's block is what I call a Dancing Pinwheel, however, I do believe it has another name. A secondary windmill is formed by the navy blue fabric when multiple blocks are used in a quilt. Again you'll need an extra fabric for this block in addition to the background and accent fabric.

Ground Hog Day 2011

Well I was happy to hear that the ground hog saw his shadow, but that blizzard the night before was wicked. It's hard to see from pictures, but 2 entrances were completely blocked and the drifts were impressive considering we tried to keep some of them under control the night before. We shouldn't have bothered.

It was all funny until we tried to move it.
