This week's block is what I call a Dancing Pinwheel, however, I do believe it has another name. A secondary windmill is formed by the navy blue fabric when multiple blocks are used in a quilt. Again you'll need an extra fabric for this block in addition to the background and accent fabric.
Background
Cut 1 strip 23/8 inches wide. Subcut strip into 8 squares. |
Accent
Cut 1 strip 23/8 inches wide. Subcut strip into 4 squares. |
Additional Fabric
Cut 1 strip 23/8 inches wide. Subcut strip into 4 squares. |
Half Square Triangle Instructions
- Match a square of background fabric with a square of accent fabric right sides together.
- Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on wrong side of lighter fabric.
- Sew ¼ inch seam on both side of diagonal line.
- Cut units apart on drawn diagonal line.
- Press seam to one side.
- Repeat with all accent fabric and then with a background and additional fabric.
Makes 8 half square triangle units per fabric pair. |
Finishing up Dancing Pinwheel block
Using all 16 half square triangle units, sew block together as shown in layout, first rows, then columns using a ¼ inch seam. Press seams to one side. |
Here is a
fabric calculator to use to design your own quilt.
