Sampler Quilt 2011 - Week 16 - Starflower

The Starflower block is a traditional block and we'll be using half square triangles to make it. It uses 3 fabrics, background and accent fabric plus another coordinating fabric.

Fabrics


Background fabric: 1/8 yd
Unit A - Cut 1 strip 2 inches wide. Subcut strip into 4 squares.
Cut 1 strip 23/8 inches wide. Subcut strip into 4 squares.

Accent fabric: 1/8 yd
Cut 1 strip 23/8 inches wide. Subcut strip into 4 squares.

Coordinating fabric: 1/8 yd
Cut 1 strip 23/8 inches wide. Subcut strip into 4 squares.

  1. Match 1 square of each fabric right sides together.
  2. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on wrong side of lighter fabric.
  3. Sew 1/4 inch seam on both side of diagonal line.
  4. Cut units apart on drawn diagonal line.
  5. Press seam to one side.
  6. Makes 2 units.
Unit B - fabrics 1 and 2 make 4.
Unit C - fabrics 1 and 3 make 4.
Unit D - fabrics 2 and 3 make 4.

Block instructions

Starflower layout
Using 4 each of unit A, B, C, and D, sew block together as shown in layout with 1/4 inch seam allowance. Press seams to one side.
Tip: Put desired fabrics right sides together and then cut squares. This way, square pairs will already be matched.
