Sampler Quilt 2011 - Week 17 - Jacobs Ladder

Jacob's Ladder is a nine patch grid layout block using four patch units and half square triangle units. Use 3 fabrics, background and accent fabric plus an additional coordinating fabric.

Fabrics

fabric 1Background fabric: Cut 1 strip(s) 1½ inches wide. Cut 1 strip(s) 2⅞ inches wide. Subcut into 2 squares.
fabric 2Accent fabric: Cut 1 strip(s) 1½ inches wide.
fabric 3Coordinating fabric: Cut 1 strip(s) 2⅞ inches wide. Subcut into 2 squares.

Instructions


Four Patch

  1. Using 1 strip each from Fabric 1 and 2 right sides together, sew strips with a ¼ inch seam.
  2. Press toward darker fabric.
  3. Subcut strip set into 1½ wide 2 patches.
  4. Match 2 sets right sides together with opposite fabrics together.
  5. Sew using a ¼ seam on one side
  6. Press to one side.
  7. Make 5 four patch(es).

Half Square Triangles

  1. Match one square each of fabric 1 and 3 right sides together.
  2. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on wrong side of lighter fabric.
  3. Sew ¼ inch seam on both side of diagonal line.
  4. Cut units apart on drawn diagonal line.
  5. Press seam to one side.
  6. Makes 2 units per square pair.
  7. Make 4 per block for a total of 4.

Jacob's Ladder final instructions

Layout block pieces using four patches and half square triangles as shown in diagram. Sew first columns, then rows using a ¼ inch seam. Press seams to one side.
