Sampler Quilt 2011 - Week 14 - Nine Patch

The nine patch block can be made with any combination of 2 to 9 different fabrics. In this version we'll be using 3 fabrics: background, accent and 1 complimentary fabric.

We will be chain piecing this block together, which means that you sew the first pair of squares together, leave needle down and do NOT cut the thread. Position next pair of squares and continue sewing. Repeat one more time for last square pair in the first 2 columns of block. Doing this keeps your pieces from getting mixed up while sewing the rest of the block.

Instructions

  • Cut 4 - 2½ inch squares from background and accent fabric and 1 - 2½ inch square from complimentary fabric.
  • Chain piece fabrics as shown using a ¼ inch seam.
  • Press seams to one side.
The Nine Patch block will measure 6½ inches including seam allowance. For instructions and a fabric calculator to make Nine Patches for your own project, visit www.myquiltgenie.com.
