Sampler Quilt 2011 - Week 43 - Windblown Square

The Windblown Square block is set in a 2 by 2 square layout using 4 different fabrics and half square triangle units.




Fabric Instructions

Fabric 1 - light: Cut 12 half square triangles from 2 inch strips.
Fabric 2 - medium light: Cut 4 half square triangles from 2 inch strips.
Fabric 3 - medium: Cut 8 half square triangles from 2 inch strips.
Fabric 4 - dark: Cut 8 half square triangles from 2 inch strips.

Half Square Triangle Instructions
  1. Match 1 strip of each fabric right sides together.
  2. Using a side right triangle ruler, cut half square triangles. Move ruler upside down for next cut when necessary.
  3. Sew ¼ inch seam on long side of triangle pair.
  4. Press seam to one side.
Make 4 half square triangle units each using Fabric 1 & 2, Fabric 1 & 3, Fabric 1 & 4, and Fabric 3 & 4.

Windblown Square Finishing Instructions

Layout each Windblown Square block units as shown and chain piece together first rows, then columns using a ¼ inch seam. Press seams to one side.
