Sampler Quilt 2011 - Week 41 - Pineapple Star

The Pineapple Star block is constructed with squares, square goose (a.k.a. peaky and spike) units and a square in a square unit.

You can design your own projects with the Pineapple Star calculator setting variable sizes and quantities.

Fabric instructions (templates)

  • Background: Cut 4 triangles from 2½ inch strips using template A. Cut 4 squares from 2½ inch strips.
  • Accent 1: Cut 4 triangles from 2½ inch strips using template B, then 4 more triangles mirrored. Cut 4 half square triangles from 1½ inch strips using template C.
  • Accent 2: Cut 1 on point square from 2½ inch square using template D.

Square Goose unit instructions

  1. Mark ¼ inch seam line points of all pieces on the wrong side of fabric with a fabric marking pencil.
  2. Lay template B fabric triangle on right side of a template A triangle right sides together matching raw edges and aligning seam points.
  3. Sew a ¼ inch seam on matched side.
  4. Gently press open with seam allowance toward template B fabric.
  5. Lay template B mirror fabric triangle on the other long side of template A triangle right sides together matching raw edges and aligning seam points.
  6. Sew a ¼ inch seam on matched side.
  7. Gently press open with seam allowance toward template B fabric.
  8. Make 3 more Square Goose units.

Square in a Square unit instructions

  1. Lay a template C triangle on both of opposite sides of on point (template D) square matching raw edges and aligning seam points.
  2. Sew a ¼ inch seam on matched sides.
  3. Gently press open with seam allowance toward triangle fabric.
  4. Lay remaining template C triangles on remaining sides of on point (template D) square matching raw edges and aligning seam points.
  5. Sew a ¼ inch seam on matched sides.
  6. Gently press open with seam allowance toward triangle fabric.

Pineapple Star finishing instructions

Layout background squares, square goose units and square in a square units as shown and chain piece together with a ¼ inch seam. Press seams to one side.

The finished block should measure 6½ inches square.
