Sampler Quilt 2011 - Week 40 - Economy

The Economy block uses squares, half square and quarter square triangles and works best with block sizes that are easily divisible by 2.

Fabric instructions

  • Background fabric: Cut 4 half square triangles using a half square triangle ruler from 3½ inch strips.
  • Accent 1 fabric: Cut 4 quarter square triangles using a quarter square triangle ruler from 2 inch strips.
  • Accent 2 fabric: Cut 1 square 3½ inches.

Economy block instructions

  1. Match 2 Accent 1 triangles to opposite sides of Accent 2 square, right sides together, with long end of triangle to square edge and centered.
  2. Sew triangles to square with a ¼ inch seam.
  3. Finger press toward triangles.
  4. Match remaining 2 Accent 1 triangles to the open sides of square, right sides together, with long end of triangle to square edge and centered.
  5. Sew triangles to square with a ¼ inch seam.
  6. Press toward triangles.
  7. Match 2 Background triangles to opposite sides of sewn unit, right sides together, with long end of triangle to unit edge and centered.
  8. Sew triangles to unit with a ¼ inch seam.
  9. Finger press toward triangles.
  10. Match remaining 2 triangles to the open sides of unit, right sides together, with long end of triangle to square edge and centered.
  11. Sew triangles to square with a ¼ inch seam.
  12. Press toward triangles.
