Sampler Quilt 2011 - Week 29 - Centers in the Corners

Centers in the Corners is a log cabin style block. Strips are 1½ inches wide from a background fabric at least 25 inches long and an accent fabric at least 18 inches long. Centers in the Corners calculator is available for different size and number of blocks as well as piecing methods for your own project.


Fabric Instructions

Background Fabric: Cut 1 each of the following lengths from 1½ inch strips - 1½, 2½, 3½, 4½, 5½ and 6½.
Accent Fabric: Cut 1 each of the following lengths from 1½ inch strips - 1½, 2½, 3½, 4½ and 5½.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Start by sewing a Background and Accent 1½ inch squares right sides together with ¼ inch seam; press toward accent fabric.
  2. Turn unit so Accent fabric is on top and Background fabric is below it and place a Background 2½ inch strip right sides together on right side of unit.
  3. Sew strip using a ¼ inch seam; press toward just sewn strip.
  4. Turn unit so just sewn Background strip is at the bottom and place Accent 2½ inch strip right sides together on right side of unit.
  5. Sew strip using a ¼ inch seam; press toward just sewn strip.
  6. Turn unit so just sewn Accent fabric is at the top and place 3½ inch Background fabric strip right sides together on right side of unit.
  7. Sew strip using a ¼ inch seam; press toward just sewn strip.
  8. Repeat steps 4 - 7 using the next larger and larger strip of Background and Accent fabrics until finished.
