Sampler Quilt 2011 - Week 23 - Sawtooth Square

The Sawtooth Square block uses 2 fabrics (background and accent) with squares and half square triangle units. We're going to use half square triangle rulers to make the units so all strips can be cut at 2½ inch strips.


Fabrics

fabric 1Background Fabric: Cut 1 strip 2½ inches wide. Subcut into 1 square and 6 half square triangles (see instructions below).
fabric 2Accent Fabric: Cut 1 strips 2½ inches wide. Subcut into 2 squares and 6 half square triangles (see instructions below).

  1. Cut half square triangles from strips as listed in cutting instructions.
  2. Match half square triangles of each fabric right sides together and sew ¼ inch seam on long side of half square triangle; press toward darker fabric.
Make 6 half square triangle units.
Sawtooth Square Finishing

Sawtooth Square Finishing instructions

Layout pieces as shown in diagram and chain piece block, first rows, then columns, using a ¼ inch seam. Press seams to one side.
