Sampler Quilt 2011 - Week 37 - Contrary Wife

The Contrary Wife block is made from squares and half square triangles unit, set in a nine patch layout and uses 3 fabrics.

You can use the Contrary Wife block instruction and fabric calculator to create your own projects. The calculator allows you to change the piecing & cutting method, the block size, the number of blocks to make as well as the fabric size you're cutting from to give you a custom instructions and fabric requirements.

Fabric Instructions

Background: Cut 4 half square triangles from 2½ inch strips using a half square triangle ruler.
Accent 1: Cut 5 squares from 2½ inch strips.
Accent 2: Cut 4 half square triangles from 2½ inch strips using a half square triangle ruler.

Half Square Triangle Instructions

  1. Match 1 strip of each fabric right sides together.
  2. Using a side right triangle ruler, cut half square triangles. Move ruler upside down for next cut when necessary.
  3. Sew ¼ inch seam on long side of triangle pair.
  4. Press seam to one side.

Contrary Wife Finishing

Layout each Contrary Wife block units as shown and chain piece together first rows, then columns using a ¼ inch seam. Press seams to one side.
