Sampler Quilt 2011 - Week 36 - Box Kite

The Box Kite block is set in a 3 by 3 square grid layout of half square triangle and square units using 3 fabrics. Choose a background with 2 accent fabrics, medium to dark.

Fabric instructions

Background: Cut 8 half square triangles (see instructions below) from 2½ inch strip
Accent 1: Cut 4 half square triangles (see instructions below) from 2½ inch strip
Accent 2: Cut 1 square and 4 half square triangles (see instructions below) from 2½ inch strip

Half Square Triangle instructions

  1. Match a strip of Background and Accent 1 fabric right sides together.
  2. Cut 4 half square triangle pairs using a half square triangle ruler, turning as needed for next cut.
  3. Sew pairs together on long side of triangles using a ¼ inch seam.
  4. Press toward lighter fabric.
  5. Repeat 1 through 4 with Background and Accent 2 fabrics.

Box Kite finishing instructions

Layout the Box Kite block as shown and chain piece block together, first rows, then columns, with a ¼ inch seam. Press seams to one side.
