Old Maid's Puzzle quilt - part 3


Pinwheel block

Cut 4 half square triangles each from background and fabric 3 (green) using a half square triangle ruler.

Sew half square triangle units together, then in to a Pinwheel block as shown.

Finishing

Layout and sew blocks as shown and notice that the blocks are not all facing the same direction.

For border 1, cut 4 strips 2½ inches wide.

For border 2, cut 5 strips 4½ inches wide.

The backing and batting will need to be at least 50 inches square.

Old Maid's Puzzle quilt - part 2



Old Maid's Puzzle block 2

Background (beige)
Cut 16 squares and 40 half square triangles using a half square triangle ruler from 3½ inch strips.

Fabric 2 (red)
Cut 8 half square triangles using a half square triangle ruler from 6½ inch strips.

Fabric 3 (green)
Cut 24 half square triangles using a half square triangle from 3½ inch strips.

Sew small half square triangle units together with background and fabric 3. Next sew quarter units together as shown, then finish sewing block.

Make 4 blocks.

Old Maid's Puzzle quilt - part 1

This Old Maid's Puzzle quilt uses 2 versions of the Old Maid's Puzzle block and a Pinwheel block in the middle. Each block finishes 12 inches square. You'll need 4 fabrics for blocks and borders plus a binding and backing fabric.

Old Maid's Puzzle block 1

Background (beige)
Cut 12 squares and 24 half square triangles using a half square triangle ruler from 4½ inch strips

Fabric 1 (medium brown) and 2 (red) and 3 (green)
Cut 8 half square triangles from each fabric using a half square triangle ruler from 4½ inch strips.

Sew half square triangles together and layout as shown to finish block. Make 4 blocks.

Bright Hopes quilt

This Bright Hopes quilt measures about 52 inches square and uses the same block just turned for a fun effect.

Use the Bright Hopes quilt block calculator to make 9 blocks 12 inches square. Arrange blocks in 3 rows by 3 columns and turn them as desired. Sew blocks together with a ¼ inch seam.

Border 1 uses 4 strips 2½ inches wide plus 4 cornerstone squares 2½ inches.

Border 2 uses 6 strips 6½ inches wide.

Backing and batting should be at least 58 inches square.

For a double thick mitered binding, use the calculator for 52 inch square quilt.

Whirling Geese table top quilt

Finished size: 22 inches square
For the Whirling Geese table top quilt, you'll need 4 fabrics or 3 fabric groups and a border. All strips are 2½ inches wide, so get out your jelly rolls and have fun!

Blocks

Use the Whirling Geese calculator with the default settings to make the quilt top blocks.
Method: Special Rulers
Block Size: 6"
Columns: 3
Rows: 4

Border

Cut 3 strips 2½ inches wide. Sew borders to top and bottom, then sides.

Finishing

Use background fabric and batting of at least 25 inches square to sandwich and baste quilt using your favorite method. Quilt as desired and attach your choice of binding (double mitered instructions) to finish.

Scrappy Arrowhead Quilt

To make this Scrappy Arrowheads quilt choose an assortment of lights for background, greens and reds. Use the half square triangle calculator for a 2 inch finished size.

Green: 16 squares 2-7/8 inches.
Red: 16 squares 2-7/8 inches.
Background: 32 squares 2-7/8 inches.


A - make 12 green & green units.
B - make 8 green & background units.
C - make 24 background & background units.
D - make 12 red & red units.
E - make 8 red & background units.

Sew 2 green quarters and 2 red quarters as shown with a ¼ inch seam and press seams to one side..
Sew quarters together as shown with a ¼ inch seam and press seams to one side.

Add a 1½ inch border and finish quilt using your favorite method. The finished size will be approximately 19 inches square.

Tips:

  1. When choosing fabric, be sure that there is low contrast with in each of the fabric color groups, but high contrast between each group.
  2. Choose themed fabric such as Christmas or Halloween to make a holiday table top/wall hanging.

Garden Quilt Along - Sashing

Adding Sashing - Optional

You will need 8 strips of 1½ inch wide sashing.

Cutting instructions

A - Cut (4) strips 12½ inches long
B - Cut (1) strip 25½ inches long
C - Cut (1) strip 31½ inches long
D - Cut (3) strips 38½ inches long
E - Cut (2) strips 40½ inches long
F - Cut (1) strip 1½ by 6½ inches from background fabric of the “dragonfly/butterfly” block

Assembly instructions


  1. Use sashing piece F to join the two “dragonfly/butterfly” blocks on short side.
  2. (Bottom row) Sew Watering Can block to Sunflower block side by side with sashing piece A in between.
  3. (Middle row) Sew Friendship Flower block to Birdhouse block side by side with sashing piece A in between.
  4. (Top row) Sew Sun block to Flower Pot block to Tulip block side by side with sashing pieces A in between.
  5. Sew middle row to bottom row with sashing piece C in between.
  6. Sew Dragonfly block to right side of middle and bottom rows with sashing piece B in between.
  7. Sew top row to lower blocks with sashing piece D in between.
  8. Sew a sashing piece E to each of the top and bottom of quilt top.
  9. Lastly, sew the remaining sashing pieces E to each side of the quilt top.
Add a 4 inch wide border or any size you choose to finish your garden quilt top.
