The Ribbon Star block is made with half square triangle units and squares. There are a variety of ways to make a half square triangle unit - from squares, strips or using templates and more. To make the strip cutting widths all the same, I'm going to use the strip method and cutting using a side right triangle ruler. You can make other projects using the
fabric instruction calculator at my website.
Fabrics: You'll need 3 fabrics for the Ribbon Star block, background and accent plus another complimentary fabric.
- Cut a 2½ inch strip from each of the 3 fabrics.
- Cut 1 square from the accent fabric for center.
- Match a background fabric right sides together with each of the other 2 fabrics and cut 4 half square triangle pairs for each fabric pair.
- Sew ¼ inch seam on long side of triangle pairs; press toward darker fabric.
- Layout units as shown and chain piece first rows, then columns with ¼ inch seam.
- Press seams to one side.

The block should measure 6½ inches including seam allowance as all the blocks in the Sampler 2011 quilt.
The Ribbon Star block in this size also works great with
Jelly Roll fabric strips![](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/blogger_img_proxy/AEn0k_tfeMBOzafxxsTcbOVey63Q5D4glw6REBslNxBSQFk3GwSzG2v8Dhct5uGDj-mFZWAdMIKZor7oZdJmqJo69NZVTIcY25exj5rrTxRFrQchr1m6oYyaWBtbqC1zyUdmsCjrr5byCa7g_HCVxaWps0uWVtc_zwg5U_oWcAeu=s0-d)
with which you could make approximately 63 blocks (7 by 9) to make a throw sized quilt 42" by 54" plus borders.
